How can Somatic Movement help me?
Somatic Movement is movement education that teaches us how to release chronic muscle tension, improve posture and movement. It is done by retraining your nervous system resulting in you being able to move with freedom and ease in your everyday movement.
✔ Internal Experience of Movement The focus of Somatic Movement is on the internal experience rather than the external appearance of the exercise. It is performed slowly, consciously and with your eyes closed so your complete internal focus and attention is on the movement.
✔ Benefits Somatic Movement can be used to relieve chronic musculoskeletal pain and helps with the following: release of chronic muscle tension, improve posture, enhance athletic performance, improve flexibility and range of motion, prevent injuries, improve balance, reduce stress, improve sleeping and breathing.
✔ Education You are taught exercises during your session so that you can practise them at home. This means after the session you can continue to improve indefinitely and develop your self-awareness of your own movement patterns. You are an active participant in the process with the end goal being that you will be able to resolve any muscle pain/movements issues you may experience yourself. Practising the exercises on a daily basis will retrain one’s nervous system.
✔ Modification If you are currently in pain and/or you have limited movement the exercises are able to be modified so you can do them comfortably. The exercises are performed slowly and gently resulting in long lasting results that address the root cause of the pain and release the tension held in your muscles
✔ Ground-breaking pain relief technique Through the technique of Pandiculation your muscle memory is retrained and your nervous system is taught to release chronic, subconsciously held muscle tension. Your brain is engaged through the process of deliberate contraction, (consciously you tighten your muscles to regain voluntary control) slow, gentle release (slowly and carefully relaxing the muscles back to their natural resting length) and pausing at rest (allowing the body to sense the difference between tension and relaxation)
✔ Effective talk therapy It is through your own thoughts, reactions, emotions, traumas and experiences that has created the habitual patterns that have resulted in one’s dysfunction within our body. We become really good at holding our muscles tight without even realising we are doing it. Sometimes words are hard to articulate and somatic movement allows for a safe emotional release to take place in a non-verbal form.
